Absolutely Fabulous: The Complete Series 1-3 Collection (DVD)

Absolutely Fabulous: Fashion
In the inaugural episode of popular Brit-com Absolutely Fabulous, a drinking binge and a fashion event provide the framework in which to introduce several of the show's primary characters: slothful forty-ish PR exec Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders); her caustic, no-nonsense daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha); her hard-drinking, coke-snorting, sexed-up best friend, Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley); and Bubble (Jane Horrocks), her intellect-free personal assistant. As the show begins, Edina is nursing yet another hangover -- until she realizes that today's the day the firm she owns is throwing a great big fashion show. After trading barbs with Saffron (or "Saffy") and lunching with the chic, disdainful Patsy, Edina finally drags herself into the office for a few hours of frantic activity. Bubble reports that big draw Yasmin LeBon has dropped out of the runway ranks and that Princess Anne has replaced Princess Diana on the guest list. Vowing

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Season One (DVD)

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Revenge
Alfred Hitchcock himself directed the first half-hour episode of his long-running suspense anthology. Heading the cast of Revenge is Ralph Meeker as aircraft worker Carl Spann and Vera Miles (The Wrong Man, Psycho) as Carl's ballerina wife Elsa. Having given up his job to care for Elsa after she suffers a nervous breakdown, Carl comes home one day to find all the furniture overturned and his wife in a state of near-shock. She tells Carl that a man had broken into their home and assaulted her, but cannot remember any other details. Later on, while out on a drive with Carl, Elsa stares at a passing pedestrian and whispers, "That's him! That's the man!" -- whereupon the vengeful Carl prepares to take the law into his own hands. "Revenge" was re-filmed as part of the 1985 Alfred Hitchcock Presents revival, featuring Linda Purl in the Vera Miles role. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

All in the Family: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)

All in the Family [TV Series]
"The program you are about to see is All in the Family. It seeks to throw a humorous spotlight on our frailties, prejudices, and concerns. By making them a source of laughter, we hope to show -- in a mature fashion -- just how absurd they are." With this carefully worded disclaimer, the CBS television network ushered in a new era of television comedy on January 12, 1971, with the premiere of All in the Family. Inspired by the British sitcom Till Death Do Us Part, the series was proposed by producers Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin in early 1968, and a pilot episode titled "Those Were the Days" was commissioned by ABC. From the beginning, Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were "set" as leading characters Archie and Edith Bunker (original last name: Justice), though two unknowns were cast as the couple's daughter, Gloria, and son-in-law, Mike Stivic. Also from the beginning, it had been decided to retain the controversia

American Gothic: The Complete Series (DVD)

American Gothic [TV Series]
One of the earliest forays into TV production by former teen idol Shaun Cassidy, the weekly, hour-long supernatural drama series American Gothic debuted September 22, 1995 on CBS. Things weren't quite right in the outwardly peaceful and respectable town of Trinity in Fulton County, South Carolina. Credit (or blame) for the ominous strangeness permeating the area could be laid at the feet of malevolent sheriff Lucas Buck (Gary Cole), who subtly held the populace in thrall, using his demonic powers for coercion, intimidation and murder. Even so, everyone considered Sheriff Buck one of nicest guys in town. . .at least, everyone who voices no objections to dancing to the crack of his whip. Buck's deputy Ben Healy (Nick Searcy) was the only person aware of the full depth and breadth of Lucas' evil, but he was powerless to stop it. As for Buck's girlfriend, sexy schoolteacher Selena Coombs (Brenda Bakke), she somehow managed to avoid his terrible wrath

American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (DVD)

American Idol: The Search for a Superstar
The Fox talent search American Idol became the highest-rated new series of the year during the summer of 2002. Based on Britain's Pop Idol TV series, the program promised a recording contract for the one winner out of 10,000 contestants under the age of 24. Although the audience called in and voted for the final winner, the judges eliminated performers in each episode. While the talent of the young singers was often questionable, some of the show's entertainment value concerned judge and co-creator Simon Cowell assaulting the contestants with insults, while also engaging in fights with the other judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide
